Historian Clare Mulley talks to Julia Wheeler about the incredible story of the courageous resistance fighter Elżbieta Zawacka, also known as ‘Elizabeth Watson’ but more often as ‘Zo’ – the only woman to parachute from Britain to Nazi-German occupied Poland during the Second World War and the sole female member of the Polish special forces.
Clare Mulley is an award-winning public historian, author and broadcaster, primarily focused on female experience during the Second World War. Her publications include The Woman Who Saved the Children; The Spy Who Loved; and The Women Who Flew for Hitler. Clare’s books are widely translated, and have all been optioned for film or TV. She also writes and reviews for the Telegraph, Spectator, TLS, Literary Review, History Today, BBC History, Military History Monthly and Britain at War, and has served as a judge for the Historical Writers Association and Biographers Club book prizes.
