Archeology, history and the lived experience of an amateur potter combine in this love letter to clay. Writer and broadcaster Jennifer Lucy Allan talks to Faversham-based potter Lucy Rutter about the mysteries of clay, the ceramic tradition, and how and why people have been taking handfuls of earth and forming them into their own image since human history began... humans first recorded our own history on clay tablets, and the first love poem was inscribed in a clay tablet more than 4000 years ago.
With a PhD in foghorns Jennifer Lucy Allan is author of The Foghorn's Lament, which examines the music, history and the dark life of the sea through the foghorn. She writes on underground and experimental music, and is a presenter on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction.
Lucy Rutter is a potter working in St Just, France and Faversham, making wheel-thrown stoneware pottery inspired by the landscapes and local artistic traditions of the Kent marshes and the South West Coast Path.
